Tim Carter of Second Nature to explore Networks of Innovation at 2016 TUFF Summit
The 5th annual TUFF Summit explores scaling change through networks of innovation. According to featured speaker, Dr. Tim Carter – President of Second Nature, there are many examples of sustainability actions, programs, and initiatives that serve on their own merit recognition. While sharing these case studies remains an important part of learning – the fruits of innovation are more effectively harvested through the alignment of production networks. Dr. Carter will showcase a number of innovative sustainability solutions, such as creative campus financing through monetizing carbon reductions and scaled renewable energy purchases.
Dr. Carter is among dozens of thought-leaders participating in this year’s TUFF Summit. As President of Second Nature, Carter directs a national advocacy organization for promoting university facilities sustainability. Since its founding in 1993, Second Nature has played a critical role in mobilizing higher education to “move the needle” towards the goal of a sustainable society. According to Carter, university leaders hold a special place in our society, and they are in a unique position to lead on climate issues. “We believe that bold and transformational commitments to sustainability, beginning with leadership in higher education, are ways to move society towards a future that redefines and restores our relationship with our environment” maintains Carter.
Dr. Carter received his Ph.D. in Ecology with distinction from the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia (UGA) and completed his B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. As a post-doctorate and faculty member at UGA his work focused on the intersection between urbanization and environmental management through studies of designer ecosystems, sustainable development, environmental policy, and climate change impacts on coastal areas, including visualizing sea level rise on the Georgia coast.
